Common auto electrical jobs in Trentham

Trentham is home to about 1,380 people, roughly halfway between Woodend and Daylesford, with Wombat State Forest on its doorstep. Potato farming, tourism and long drives to Kyneton, Daylesford or Ballarat create a job mix you won't see in the suburbs.

Batteries in Victoria's coldest town

Trentham's mean maximum temperature is only about 15.6 degrees, and winters bring sleet and the occasional snowfall. That's hard on batteries, which lose cranking power in the cold. A battery that is three or four years old may still pass in summer but fail on a frosty July morning. Test it in autumn, keep the terminals clean, and choose a battery with a good cold cranking amps rating. Our guide on car battery types explains the ratings.

Power when the grid goes down

The June 2021 storms brought down trees across the forest around Trentham, cut road access and left residents without power for days. A vehicle with a dual battery system, or a portable battery box, can run a fridge, lights and phone chargers through an outage. Size the inverter for the loads you actually need, and never run a generator or engine in a closed shed. Our guide on choosing and installing an inverter helps with sizing.

Heater fans and demisters in long winters

With cold, damp weather for much of the year, heater fans and rear demisters in Trentham work harder than in most towns, and they tend to fail when you need them most. A fan that only runs on the highest setting usually means a failed blower resistor. A demister that has stopped completely is often a fuse, relay or loose tab on the glass. Check the simple things first before replacing larger parts.

Farm utes and potato season

Potatoes have long been grown in Trentham's red volcanic soil, and farm vehicles here deal with mud, dust and long working days. Work lights, UHF radios and trailer plugs on these vehicles take a beating. Use sealed connectors, fuse every accessory feed close to the battery, and check earth straps when lights start playing up. Our guide on what size cable you need for 12V helps when adding new gear.

Trentham auto electrical questions

What battery should I buy for winters in Trentham?

Start with the type and size your vehicle specifies, then choose one with a cold cranking amps rating at or above the original. Cars with stop-start need an AGM or EFB battery. A battery with a good CCA rating copes better with frosty starts, but even a good one needs to be kept charged if the car is used only for short trips.

Can I run my house fridge from my car during a power outage?

A house fridge can be run for short periods from a good inverter connected to a second battery, but it draws a lot of power when the compressor starts. A pure sine wave inverter of adequate size and a decent battery bank are needed. For longer outages, a 12V fridge or a properly installed generator inlet is more practical.

Why do my headlights fog up inside in winter?

Condensation inside a headlight usually means the seal or a vent cap has failed, letting moist air in. Cold nights then cause it to condense on the lens. Check the rubber caps on the back of the headlight and the seal around the lens. Persistent water can corrode the globe holder and cause flickering.

Local tip for Trentham

Before winter sets in, put a small emergency kit in the car for Trentham's back roads: a torch, a phone charging cable that runs off the car, jumper leads or a jump starter, and warm clothes. If a fallen tree blocks the road home, you'll be glad you thought ahead.
