Common auto electrical jobs in Waubra

Waubra sits about 33 km north-west of Ballarat, with the 128 turbines of the Waubra Wind Farm on both sides of the Sunraysia Highway. Farming, mostly livestock, is the main industry, and many of the roughly 300 residents drive to Ballarat for work.

Alternators on the long commute

A daily round trip of more than 60 km into Ballarat puts real hours on the charging system. Alternators wear out, and the early signs are easy to miss: headlights that dim at idle, a battery that needs a jump now and then, or a whine that changes with engine speed. Catching it early beats a breakdown on a quiet stretch of highway. Our guide how do I know if my alternator needs replacing lists the signs.

Getting cable size right

Long cable runs are common on farm vehicles: a pump at the far end of the tray, a light on the back of a stock crate, or a 12V feed from the ute to a trailer. Voltage drops along a cable, and the longer the run and the bigger the load, the thicker the cable needs to be. Too thin and the pump runs slowly or the cable gets hot. Our guide what size cable do I need for 12V has a sizing chart.

Stock trailer wiring

Stock trailers on gravel farm roads take a beating underneath. Trailer cables get pinched by tailgates, stretched when the drawbar flexes and sandblasted by stones. Running the loom inside conduit, clipping it every few hundred millimetres and using a sealed junction box at the front of the trailer keeps it alive much longer. Leave enough slack at the coupling for tight turns so the plug isn't pulled out or damaged.

Batteries in farm machinery

Tractors, quad bikes and older farm trucks often sit for weeks between jobs, especially over winter. Their batteries lose charge slowly, and a battery left flat for long periods sulphates and loses capacity for good. A solar trickle charger on the shed roof, or a smart charger that can stay connected, keeps machinery ready to go. Test before the busy season; our guide on how to test a car battery shows how.

Waubra auto electrical questions

Why does my water pump run slowly off the ute battery?

Usually the voltage is dropping before it reaches the pump. Long runs of thin cable, poor earths and corroded connections all reduce voltage, and a pump motor slows down when it's starved. Check the voltage at the pump while it's running. If it's well below battery voltage, upgrade the cable, clean the connections and run a dedicated earth wire.

Is a small solar panel enough to keep a tractor battery charged?

For keeping a battery topped up while the machine sits, a small panel with a regulator is usually enough. It won't recharge a flat battery quickly, so start with the battery fully charged. Mount the panel facing north with no shade, and check the regulator suits the battery type. If the battery still goes flat, look for a drain or a battery past its best.

Local tip for Waubra

Before winter, spend an afternoon going over every vehicle and machine on the property with a multimeter: battery voltage at rest, charging voltage with the engine running, and a look at the terminals. Write the readings on a card in the shed. Next time something won't start, you'll know whether the battery was already on its way out.
