Common auto electrical jobs in Invermay

Invermay sits on the northern rural fringe of the City of Ballarat, about 5 km from the city centre, with Invermay Park just south across the freeway. It was farmland until the early 1970s, and today around 900 people live on rural-residential blocks.

Brake controllers for floats and vans

Horse floats and caravans heavy enough to need electric brakes are a common sight on acreage. The brakes only work if the tow vehicle has a brake controller fitted and set up to suit the load. An empty float needs less braking than a full one, so the gain should be adjusted each time you hitch up. Our guide on installing an electric brake controller explains the wiring and setup.

7-pin or 12-pin plugs

It's common for one vehicle to tow both a flat-pin farm trailer and a round-pin caravan, which means adaptors and mismatched sockets. Every adaptor adds another connection that can corrode or work loose. Choosing the right plug for each trailer, and wiring it to the standard colour code, saves a lot of flickering lights. Our guide on 7-pin versus 12-pin trailer plugs explains the differences.

Solar for the caravan

If you keep a caravan on the property for trips away, solar lets you camp without mains power. Working out what you need starts with your daily use: fridge, lights, water pump and phone charging. Panels should be sized for winter sun as well as summer, and matched with a regulator and a battery big enough to carry you through cloudy days. Our guide how much solar do I need for my caravan walks through the numbers.

Reversing cameras for hitching up

Backing up to a float or caravan on your own is slow when you keep getting out to check the gap. A reversing camera with a clear view of the towball makes hitching a one-person job. A second camera on the back of the van or float shows what's behind you on the road. Wired cameras are the most reliable, while wireless systems suit trailers that are swapped between vehicles.

Invermay auto electrical questions

Do I need an electric brake controller for my horse float?

If the float has electric brakes, yes. Without a controller in the tow vehicle, the float's brakes won't work and the car does all the stopping. When trailer brakes are required depends on the trailer's loaded mass, so check your float's compliance plate and the rules. A proportional controller gives smoother braking, which horses appreciate.

Why do my trailer lights work on one car but not another?

Usually it's a wiring difference between the two vehicles' sockets, a corroded pin or a poor earth. On newer cars the towbar module may also need a fuse or setting checked. Test the car's socket pin by pin with a test light or multimeter. If the socket is fine, the problem is in the trailer plug, the cable or the earth back to the trailer.

Local tip for Invermay

If your float or caravan sits in a paddock or shed between uses, coat the plug pins with a little dielectric grease and hang the plug up off the ground with a cover on it. Moisture and dust in the plug cause most of the intermittent light faults that show up on a Saturday morning just as you're hitching up.
