Common auto electrical jobs in Miners Rest

Miners Rest grew from a small farming town into a township of more than 3,800 people by 2021, and the racing industry here gives it a job mix you won't find elsewhere in Ballarat.

Horse floats around Dowling Forest

The Dowling Forest racecourse on Kennedys Road has hosted the Ballarat Cup since the 1800s and has a training centre with an uphill track built to work 150 horses a day. That means a lot of floats and horse trucks on local roads. Floats need reliable tail lights, interior lights and properly set electric brakes. Manure and wash-down water are hard on plugs and earths, so check connections often. Our guide on 7-pin vs 12-pin trailer plugs helps if you're upgrading.

Cameras to watch horses in transit

Many float owners fit a camera inside the float so they can watch the horses while driving. Wireless kits are easy to fit but can drop out on long floats or in poor weather. Wired kits are more reliable but need a spare circuit through the trailer plug, which is one reason people move to a 12-pin plug. Either way, power the camera from a fused supply, not a tail light circuit.

Water damage after floods

Burrumbeet Creek runs past Miners Rest, and in the 2010 and 2011 floods it broke its banks and houses were inundated. Cars that have been in floodwater, even partly, often develop electrical faults weeks later as corrosion spreads through plugs and modules. If a car has been in water, don't try to start it until it's been checked. Tell your insurer and your auto electrician exactly how deep the water got.

Commuter cars on the freeway run

Plenty of Miners Rest residents drive into Ballarat or onto the Western Freeway every day. The drive is long enough to charge a healthy battery but won't save a failing one, and a battery warning light on the way to work needs attention straight away. It usually means the alternator isn't charging. Our guide on the battery warning light while driving explains what to do.

Farm utes and acreage work

Outside the township, Miners Rest is still largely farmland and acreage, and utes here carry pumps, spray units, lights and UHF radios. Each accessory added without planning makes the wiring harder to fault-find later. A small fuse block in the tray, fed by properly sized cable from the battery, keeps things tidy. Our guide on what size cable you need for 12V covers cable sizing.

Miners Rest auto electrical questions

Should I upgrade my horse float to a 12-pin plug?

If you want to run a float camera, interior lights or charge a float battery from the car, a 12-pin plug gives you the extra circuits. If your float only needs tail lights, indicators and brakes, a 7-pin is usually enough. Whatever you choose, make sure the car and float match, or use a quality adaptor.

My car was parked in floodwater. Can I just dry it out?

It's risky. Water gets into plugs, modules and wiring looms, and corrosion can cause faults weeks later. Don't start the car until it's been checked, and disconnect the battery if you can do it safely. Contact your insurer first, as many flood-affected cars are assessed before any repairs.

Local tip for Miners Rest

If you tow a float out of Miners Rest regularly, keep a small kit in the car: a spare globe or two, fuses, a trailer plug tester and some dielectric grease. Wash down the plug after a dirty day at the track and let it dry before the next trip. Most float lighting faults start in the plug, and a two-minute clean prevents most of them.
