Common auto electrical jobs in Black Hill

Black Hill is a hilly, leafy suburb on the north-east edge of the inner city, with the Black Hill Reserve at its centre. The bush, the trails and the larger blocks give it a different mix of jobs to the streets closer to town.

Bike racks and towbar lights

The Black Hill Reserve has cross-country and downhill trails, pump tracks and a jump park, so plenty of cars here carry a towbar-mounted bike rack. In Victoria, a carrier or bikes must not block your brake lights, tail lights or indicators, and a covered number plate needs moving to the rack or replacing with a bicycle rack plate. A light board that plugs into the towbar socket is the usual fix. Our guide on whether you need a towbar wiring harness explains getting that socket working properly.

Rodents in the engine bay

Homes backing onto the reserve and the Yarrowee River corridor see more mice and rats, especially when the weather cools. A warm, sheltered engine bay is an inviting place to nest, and rodents chew whatever is nearby, including wiring. The first sign is often a warning light, an intermittent fault or droppings on top of the engine. Chewed wires need proper repair with joins that are soldered or crimped and sealed. Our guide on rodent damage to car wiring covers prevention too.

Driving lights and light bars

Utes and 4WDs parked on Black Hill's larger blocks often head out of town on dark country roads, and a set of driving lights or a light bar is a common addition. They draw enough current that they should always run through a relay, with a fuse at the battery and a switch that only works with high beam. Cheap kits with thin cable cause voltage drop and dim lights. Our guide on how to wire a 12V relay shows the standard layout.

Anderson plugs for the weekend ute

An Anderson plug in the tub or on the towbar lets you run a portable fridge, charge a camper battery or power a compressor without fiddling with clips. It needs heavy cable, a fuse or circuit breaker at the battery end and a tidy route away from exhaust heat and sharp edges. Get the polarity right and use the correct crimp tool for the lugs. Our guide on how to wire an Anderson plug walks through the job.

The car that lives in the shed

With room for a shed, many Black Hill households keep a second car, a project car or a weekend ute that may sit for weeks. A battery left that long slowly discharges, and a deeply flat battery can be permanently damaged. A smart charger left connected in the shed keeps it topped up without overcharging. If it is already flat, charge it slowly rather than relying on a jump start. Our guide on how to charge a car battery covers the safe way to do it.

Black Hill auto electrical questions

Do I need special lights if my bike rack covers my number plate?

In Victoria, if the rack or the bikes block your brake lights, tail lights or indicators, you need to reposition the carrier or fit portable rear lights. If the number plate is hidden, you can move your plate onto the carrier or buy a bicycle rack number plate from VicRoads. A hand-made plate is not allowed.

How can I keep mice out of my car near the reserve?

There is no single fix, but a few things help. Avoid leaving food or pet food in the car or shed, check under the bonnet regularly for nests and droppings, and park in a sealed garage if you can. Some people use deterrent sprays or traps nearby. Acting early matters, because a small nibble is much cheaper to repair than a damaged loom.

Local tip for Black Hill

If you ride the Black Hill trails, plug the bike rack light board in and check every function before leaving the driveway, not at the reserve. Muddy bikes and wet weather can get into the towbar socket, so a quick spray of contact cleaner and a cover over the socket when it is not in use will keep it working much longer.
